How to Keep
Bees - "Beekeeping 101" Review
Reviewed by: Stephen Willis
I love
honey and I have always had a desire to be a beekeeper. But I
admit I had absolutely no knowledge of how to keep bees or how
to get started and figured my beekeeping desire would stay an
unfulfilled dream. So naturally, when I came across the
"Beekeeping 101" eBook, I was extremely skeptical. It just
didn't seem possible that anyone could learn how to keep bees
and get delicious honey by following the instructions in an
eBook. Still I figured the ebook was affordable so why not give
it a try?

What
immediately impressed me as I read the eBook is the
organization. Sections break down everything from types of bees
to purchase to how to install the colony, parasites to watch
out for and your duties as a beekeeper during each season. The
eBook's honesty was also refreshing. Instead of some fluff
about learning how to keep bees with no work and
effort, the introduction immediately let me know that to
succeed I had to be prepared to invest my money and my time and
I could not expect overnight results.
I paid
careful attention to the section on family and neighbors and
was glad I discussed this idea with them before I started.
Instead of my neighbors being alarmed at the idea of me
starting a beekeeping business in my backyard they were
interested to learn more! Several of my neighbors split the
start up cost with me and together we were able to share the
workload and the profits without getting
overwhelmed.
At first,
we started out as sideliners, working regular jobs but making
extra profit from our business selling honey. Since we weren't
sure how profitable the business would be we started out with a
small urban lot and followed the book's instruction to only
start with 2 hives. However, the instructions made it so easy
to know what to do next. After we got comfortable caring for
the bees and could safely remove the honey, we eventually added
more lots.

My
favorite section in the eBook was the area on what bee
equipment would be needed since it provided a detailed list of
standard equipment I should invest in and why I would need
it. The equipment plays a vital role in how to keep
bees. The free Honey Extraction report also gave great
advice that helped us properly equip a honey extraction room
and avoid contaminating the honey as we packaged
it.
The
section on parasites and diseases made it easy to keep up with
health issues that can affect bees. Though the information was
good, I would have liked to see pictures of the different
diseases and pests and some information on preventing these
issues from occurring would have been nice. However, this is a
small quibble considering the vast amount of information
contained in the Beekeeping 101 eBook.
I can
confidently say the small initial investment I made in the
eBook has really been worth it. The eBook is written in an
engaging and creative style that makes the subject fun and
entertaining. I'm sure that as soon as you start reading
you will be motivated to read the entire eBook in one
sitting!
Today,
our little neighborhood bee business is making great profit.
Finding out how to keep bees has been financially
rewarding as well as highly pleasurable. Our local
community continues to buy and we even offer our natural honey
in locally owned grocery stores. We also recently started
selling beeswax candles and lip balm and though we aren't rich
profits keep going up and I no longer have to work full
time.
